OK, What´s next?
Since its launch in 2013, RFAOH has hosted 12 on-hiatus artists worldwide with a diverse range of backgrounds and on-hiatus projects. For a DIY project with such modest beginnings, our two years of operation have generated steady responses from worldwide, including invitations to present the project internationally, and featured articles in various media. In an interview in CMagazine, editor Amish Morrell asked: “is participating in RFAOH an admission of defeat (as an artist)?” By facilitating this opportunity for these artists to step back from their art practices, while being part of this perhaps unusual yet critical residency, we have been fascinated by how differently all our residents have negotiated this question. Given the current discussions around the institutionalization of art practice and artists’ identity, we are curious to see where RFAOH really fits in the discourse surrounding the role of art within the greater culture at large.
As the end of our 2nd year approaches, we are currently re-evaluating our criteria, contract, and funding strategies. We plan to send out a new call for applications in early 2016 and continue the project into a 3rd year. To sustain funding the project ourselves, we will keep on promoting RFAOH through talks and presentations internationally, and produce more multiples for sale. We fully intend to publish a full-colour “annual report” when the budget becomes available.
